Chili/Cayenne peppers have been a part of the human diet since 7500 BC. Chili is the Aztec name for Capsicum annuum. There is archaeological evidence at sites located in southwestern Ecuador that chili peppers were domesticated more than 6000 years ago, and is one of the first cultivated crops that is self-pollinating.
The Capsicum family includes bell peppers, red peppers, paprika, and pimento, but the most famous medicinal members of the family are cayenne and chili. The tasty hot peppers have long been used in many of the world's cuisines, but their greatest use in health comes from, surprisingly, conventional medicine. Chili pepper are also a stimulant. It specifically effects the cardiovascular system, mucous membranes and digestion.
PHARMACEUTICAL ATTRIBUTES
- Due to presence of Capsaicin compounds, chili pepper is used in preparation of ointment; also used in formulation to be used in arthritic pain and sore muscles.
- If powdered red chili is applied to the part affected by a dog bite, immediately it minimizes the effect of the poison. It also acts as an antiseptic by preventing the formation of puss in the wound.
- It is used as counter-irritant, in the form of ointment, plaster, medicated wool etc. for the relief of rheumatism, lumbago, etc.
- Chilies have antibacterial qualities, and contain bioflavonoids antioxidants.
- It is effective in protecting against cancer.
